The baby rubber plant earns its name from the leaves: thick, waxy, and deeply glossy in uniform green. It is not related to the rubber tree at all. It is a peperomia, which means those leaves are storing water, and the plant is far more forgiving than it looks.

That makes it one of the better matches for kokedama. The moss ball dries down between waterings, and this plant is built to wait. It stays compact, holds its shape, and grows slowly enough that it looks the same in a year as the day it arrived.

It is also non-toxic to cats and dogs, which is not something we can say about most of what we make.

Care

• Light: bright indirect light. Tolerates medium light better than most, which makes it a good choice for a spot away from a window. Keep out of direct sun.
• Water: soak 2 to 3 minutes, drain fully, then let the ball dry most of the way before the next soak. Roughly every 10 to 14 days indoors. Check by weight. These leaves hold water, so underwatering is much safer than overwatering.
• Soft, drooping, or translucent leaves mean too much water, not too little.
• Temperature: normal indoor range, above 60F / 15C. Avoid cold drafts.
• Average household humidity is fine. No misting needed.

Every ball is formed and wrapped by hand, so the jute pattern and the shape of the sphere are unique to your piece. The plant varies too, in size, form, and color. Yours will not look exactly like the photo, and we think that is the best part.
